Fanta, officially the Kingdom of Fanta, is a nation in northern Arterus with non-contiguous borders separated by Varnia. Separated after the 19th century Varnian-Fantasian War, the provinces of Gelderland and Nordland remain connected via the Gravic Sea. The country is renowned for its ski resorts, picturesque villages, and scenic highways. Fanta is bordered by Varnia to the south of the mainland, with Tule bordering the western provinces across the Grautiefe Strait. Boarding multiple oceans, with the Gravic Sea to the west, the Oryontic to the east, the Axacal to the south, and the Great Northern Sea, Fanta has maintained a strong naval presence to ensure unobstructed trade and protection of its interests, including former colonies found in Southern Cratea. Fanta also maintains ownership of Sterne Island in the northern sea, near the mouth of the Eismund Strait, itself being inhabited since 1847 after the founding of Groessbeck.

Fanta is the second smallest nation in Arterus by area, although its broad economy surpasses both Tule and the Wolohannic Federation; however, it remains smaller than Varnia. The northern part of the country, being rich in iron ore of a high purity, is known as a center for gun makers, industrial machinery, steel mills, etc. The lower and western provinces feature swathes arable land, which provides most of the agricultural needs of the country. Oil and gas exploration typically takes place in the Gravic Sea, supplying the country with most of its petrochemical needs. The state-run oil company, FASOL (FAntasien Steenkool en OLie), provides most of the drilling infrastructure, most notably concentrated in the Gravic Sea. The country maintains a very high standard of living with the wealth of the nation being spent on social development programs involving health, housing, education, and cultural institutions.

The population of Fanta as of the last census in 2014 is estimated to be approximately 86 million people, comprised of a mix of ethnic groups such as the South Fantasian speaking Walloons, the North Fantasian speaking Alemeiners, and the Varnian speaking minority groups.

Etymology

The Fantasian name for Fanta, derives from a legendary myth in Old High Arterian, which is believed to refer to an afterlife in which heroes are reborn and golden ages are begun anew, which first appears in the "Kaltstein document" of 996 CE. Another theory posits that this name comes from the local name of the mountain whose original Arterian name is "Fykwasz" (sharp mountain) - because it is very steep on both sides. At the time, the Hallertau basin of Fanta was the easternmost extent of Fanta, and in fact of all the Fantasians, as the northern half of Arterus was only populated as late as 1300 CE.

History

Antiquity

Settled in ancient times, the land known as present day Fanta was occupied by loosely confederated tribes of Arterians , with human habitation being traced back to the Stone Age (Paleolithic era). Archaeological and linguistic evidence from a period known as the Nordic Bronze Age indicates that a common material culture existed between the Arterian tribes that inherited the southern regions of Arterus, along the Axacal coast and the area of what is now Saalfelden, Fanta. Additional archaeological remnants from the Iron Age society that once existed in nearby Wessenstadt also show traces of this culture. Exactly how these cultures interacted remains a mystery; however, the migrations of early proto-Arteran peoples are discernible from the remaining evidence of prehistoric cultures in Hügelgräber, Rugeland, and Bregenz. Climatic change between 850 BCE to 760 BCE in Areterus and "a later and more rapid one around 650 BCE might have triggered migrations to the coast of Eastern Arterus and further toward the Oryontic Sea."

During the Iron Age it was occupied by people of the Furstenbeck culture (ca. 930 BC), one of the first cohesive cultures known to man besides the Prekovy in continental Wallasea.

Dumani Imperial Period

Occupying a prominent entrance to the Gravic Sea, as well as having a long coastline along the Axacal Sea, Southern Fanta soon drew attention from the rising Dumani Empire on the Crataean continent. The Dumani had known of the populations of Western Arterus, both from trade as well as raiding not-Viking ships prodding the Crataean coastline, along with the established Fantasian merchants on Paralentum. The wide open fields of fertile land made for a choice prize for Dumani conquest and subsequent occupation to fuel the Imperial push east towards present day Varnia. Fierce fighting was common in the forested, provincial areas of inland Fanta - often impeding or destroying Dumani forces in the region. This influence lasted until the early middle ages, when the waning resolve of the unified Dumani state began to suffer infighting and ultimately result in the Crisis of the 11th Century, freeing Southern Fanta of direct Dumani control.

Middle Ages

Waning influence in the Fantasian provinces of Dumani held Arterus saw a new era of small, warring states emboldened by the ascendant tribes of the period: the Bohmisch, the Hadvari, and the Styri. Thus begun the Age of the Spear in what was then Southern Fanta.

Chiefly militaristic in nature, the Styri were able to field one of the first cohesive military units ca. 4th century CE. after the demise of the Dumani dispensation. Utilizing newer technologies of war, owing to their place along the maritime trade routes, the Styri were able to rapidly defeat the lesser tribes in the Central and Eastern provinces of Southern Fanta. Crucible steel technology was learned from the traders of central and lower Cratea, which allowed for effective production of deadly spear weaponry which were less time consuming and expensive to produce than iron and bronze age swords and axes.

The Styri were able to accumulate territory far from the coastline of their home, in what is modern day Langenthal, and by the 11th and 12th centuries had begun to make war on the peoples of northern Arterus.

Government

The Parliament of Fanta is located in Saalfelden, the country's capital and second largest city, after Langenthal on the Axackal Sea. Fanta established itself as an unitary monarchy in 1799, after the events of the War of Succession between the larger principalities and kingdoms in Southern Fanta.
